This is the inaugural Post for my upcoming series on small business birthing stories! I am really looking forward to writing features on guest small businesses of all shapes and stages.
In this blogging series we will discover and celebrate the pangs and joys that giving birth to precious small business bundles bring to their unique owners. Call it a metaphor..call it an analogy...either way, it is all about.... How the small biz was born...
Some women like to hear stories about how newlyweds met, or those birthing stories where the Mummsies get together and just love talking about their labour, their pain, the love they felt when the little head popped out or the funny husband not coping in the labour ward stories.
But for me well, one of my favourite stories to hear from business people I meet, are the small business birthing stories. This series will be covering start ups, retail, work at home Mums, entrepreneurs, consultants and more. I want to hear the fairy tale that produced that little bundle of joy;
I love to hear the story behind someone's small business idea and how it turned into a reality. The small business back drop. What went on behind the scenes? I admire small business people for their combination of skills in marketing, sales, PR, financial management, creativity, innovation, motivation, determination and good old hard work. The creation of something out of nothing!
How did they decide to take this path? Where did they get the idea, the courage, the inspiration? At what point did they go for it! Why didn't they give up when it got tough? Was there a turning point or were they catapulted into it through a traumatic or life changing event or circumstance, a financial necessity or a health issue. Many entrepreneurs and small business success stories are preceded by failure...and sometimes failure on a massive scale.
One of my all time favourite success stories of this kind is the story of how Mrs Brown's Boys star Brendon O'Carroll came to his career change that led to huge success for him and his family. Before the success, there was failure, and not just one. Bankruptcy, suspicion of murder and a failed film project. Sure sounds like Struggle Street to me! A need for income and being ineligible for social security payments at the time, out of desperation he turned to comedy. Success came in the most unexpected form.
First world issue...We are conditioned to think that failure is one of the worst things that can happen to us... when in hind sight it can actually be....the best thing that has happened to us.
Many times, people find themselves in new, uncomfortable situations, careers (or lack thereof) journeys and paths they least expect to be on or even wanted. It could have been because of something out of one's control and maybe even a traumatic experience that creates a path and our destiny shines through where we least expected. We follow the light. It makes sense. It feels right. I had no choice because I lost my job. Because of my illness I could no longer do what I was trained for, my life took a whole new direction.
This reminds me of when I saw an episode of an Australian Story last year that featured a young Aussie guy (Christiaan Van Vuuren) who found out he had drug resistant tuberculosis and had to be quarantined in a small hospital room for 6 months of his life. Imagine that. In his hospital room and to pass the time, he started making funny videos on his macbook and posted them on youtube. He subsequently became an internet hit. His life then took on a completely new direction. He now works in the film, comedy and television industry. I believe he was also invited to contribute to the NSW Health on Tuberculosis educational material to help others in his situation. Such an incredible story.
My series of posts in this category 'Small Business Birthing stories' will cover some amazing and unique small businesses. Meet the people in my business and local community that created these wonderful businesses. I know that I will be inspired and I can't wait to hear their stories and celebrate small business in Australia by sharing their stories in this special Blog category.
So expect a visit from the small business Stork via this Blog!
